Pancakes were on the menu today as class 5 opened their own pancake shop. After deciding on the name (Pancake Mania) the children each had a turn of taking orders, cooking, preparing and delivering pancakes. Orders came in thick and fast from staff and so the children decided to write a list so that they could remember. Others took money from staff and gave change. Pancake Mania became very hectic at lunch time but the children coped very well. The learning throughout the day was put into a real context and children discussed the pros and cons of working in a real restaurant.
Boat Building
The children used a range of materials to see which was the most buoyant. One table used plastercine, one table used tin foil, one table used sponges and one table used lego. The boat designs were great and it was a lot of fun launching the finished products. The first thing was to see if the boats floated then we tested how much weight they would hold. The results showed that the winners were the tin foil boats, light waterproof and perfect for boat construction. Well done boat builders.
Ice Experiment
Today the children investigated various materials and how they affected ice melting if they were used as insulation. The children investigated fabric, paper towels, plastic and one group had nothing to insulate their ice cubes. The ice took a long time to melt and they discovered that ice melts quicker when the temperature rises. Some of the children found the radiator was a good place to speed up the process. Others used the warmth from their hands.
Robots in Class 6
The Year 2 children are currently learning about robots. They are reading the Iron Giant in literacy and designing and making their own robots. The topic is very exciting for the children as they programme bluebot robots to follow a track and they have loved making wriggle bots. Great STEM learning!
Art Gallery
We have been looking at famous artists and have been painting in their style. The art of Jackson Pollock was flicky and fun compared to the straight lines and limited colours of Mondrian. The children loved looking at VanGogh’s paintings and many others. We asked, “What would you think about if you were sitting having your portrait painted?” The children were careful in their observations and have made a fabulous art gallery in class 6. Art is the best!

Sports Morning at Bishop Auckland College
The children in class 5 enjoyed their day at Bishop Auckland College. The children were given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of games and physical activities led by the HND students. The activities focused on attributes such as balance, speed and stamina. As per usual the children were impeccably behaved and represented the school well.
Robots in Class 5
The children in class 5 have been making their very own working robots this week. As part of our STEM and problem solving curriculum the children were tasked with making a robot that could draw a circle with its felt tip legs. After been shown a short demonstration, a number of children were designated as class experts, making video demonstrations of the different aspects of the build. The whole class were then shown these demonstrations. Next the children were asked to work in groups to complete the build. Remarkably the children were able to independently build the robot. They were able to solve a number of problems and modify their build when it wasn’t quite working. The perseverance shown was remarkable from such young children. A number of groups cheered when they were final able to get the robot to work.

Chinese New Year
This week in school we are celebrating Chinese New Year or should we say it in Chinese, Kung hei fat choy!
On Monday it was a great start to the celebrations of Chinese New Year because Michael, a good friend of the school brought along his Chinese Lions and told the legendary story of the Ghost Lion to the children. Every child in the school took part in this wonderful assembly including the nursery children. They answered lots of questions and were picked to either perform the lion’s dance or beat the drums. This good luck dance was very well received by the children and all were keen to participate.
Thank you Michael for a fantastic morning.
