Our Reception classes have been carefully observing the metamorphosis of a frog. They have now been able to see all of the stages of the life cycle from frogspawn to frog as this week we have many frogs jumping around in the tank! The children have been using the vocabulary they have learnt such as ‘amphibian’, ‘camouflage’, ‘metamorphosis’ and ‘hibernate’. What a very exciting week we’ve had!
Life Cycle of a Chicken in EYFS
Children in reception were so excited when ten eggs arrived in an incubator and they waited eagerly for them to hatch. It has been wonderful to hear the observations the children have made while they observed this process. They have learnt so much through this experience alongside our shared books about the life cycle of a chicken.
The Tiger Who Came to Tea
Following on from our Chinese New Year Learning and the Year of the Tiger we have been reading the story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ and some non-fiction books about tigers around the world. We have seen some wonderful learning around the areas of provision in the classroom. The children have been painting tigers, writing shopping lists in the writing area, using tea bags and tea pots in the outdoor area, role playing the story in the home corner with our story props and also using the small world area to make Sophie’s house and re-tell the story. Our children were very curious to learn more about tigers and we did this through shared non-fiction books and through watching some discovery videos. At the end of this sequence of learning our children shared their knowledge of tigers and we recorded this together. The vocabulary they used was tremendous and the knowledge they shared was very impressive!
Ambulance Visit
We were able to welcome a paramedic into our reception classroom today who spoke to our children about his job. They learnt about the recovery position and even had time to practise this with their friends and teachers. We talked about when we might need to call 999 and how to keep each other safe. The children showed lots of curiosity when looking around the ambulance asking some great questions and learning some new vocabulary from our visitor.
Chinese New Year in Reception
Reception have been learning about the animals in the Chinese Zodiac this week through our shared story. They have been busy in the art room making Chinese lions and lantern and they have tried some Chinese food. We have seen some beautiful ribbon dancing and enjoyed performing our own lion parade outside! What a fun week celebrating Chinese New Year.
Art and Colour in EYFS
It is fantastic to see the engagement in the classroom which comes from interest in our story of the week in reception. In recent weeks the children have been looking at books about art and colour and we have seen a much higher level of curiosity and creativity in the art area. We have looked at four books in particular which the children have very much enjoyed. Many of the children have been experimenting with shades of colour this week, knowing that adding white makes a lighter shade and adding black makes a darker shade. There have been lots of discussions between the children about the different colours they create. A lovely shade of pink was made by some of the girls and they then began turning their art in to the colour monster from our shared story. The discussion then changed from colour shades to the emotions of the colour monster. There is also a much higher interest in the junk modelling area. We have seen excellent concentration from the children when joining parts of models together with different joining materials.
Mass and Capacity
This week we have been learning about mass and capacity. The children have learnt key vocabulary including full, empty, lighter and heavier. The boys and girls have been comparing the weight of different objects in the classroom using balance scales. We have also made delicious strawberry and chocolate milkshakes, counting the teaspoons of powder and mixing it with the milk. It was wonderful to hear the boys and girls describing the amount of milkshake in the cup as full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty.
Letters to Santa
Writing our letters to Santa has been a very enjoyable activity for our children. We worked together to write the letter and then learnt why is was important to use an envelope, write the address and why a letter needs a stamp. We walked to our local Post Office together to weigh the letter, pay for the stamp and post our letter. This inspired lots of children to write their own letters in our writing area.
Polar Express
To immerse our children in our story of the week ‘The Polar Express’ we held a wonderful themed day. The children couldn’t believe that the conductor had come all the way just to check their tickets! They enjoyed lots of yummy treats throughout the day and cosied up and watched the movie together. They have experimented with charcoal and drawn some very detailed pictures of the steam train. They have role played being the conductor and made and checked tickets before boarding their own special train. Before they went home the postman brought some letters from the North Pole!
Christmas Fair in EYFS
What a fun day Reception have had, hosting their own Christmas Fair. The children helped to set up all of the fair stalls and even made the snowman for one of our games. They have had so much fun getting Christmas tattoos, painting their nails, decorating biscuits and playing lots of fun games with their friends.
