Today we noticed that some of the children were running around the yard trying to catch their shadows. We brought out some interesting resources to encourage ‘talk’ about shadows. The children were fascinated by the coloured blocks cascading the colour on to the yard and we talked about why this happened. The children began to draw around Miss. Dixon’s shadow and then all of a sudden it disappeared from the yard. Lots of the children wondered where it had gone and some of them looked straight up into the sky and realised that the sun was hidden behind some clouds. This work continued on into the afternoon and some lovely team work was shown from the children. They found a partner and took turns to draw around their shadow, trying to make interesting shapes with their bodies. We also lined up the dinosaurs to look at the interesting shadows that were made.
Self Portraits
The children in Reception have been busy producing self-portraits this week. We have encouraged the children to look carefully in a mirror before drawing and to add the details they could see. These self-portraits look wonderful in the classrooms on display with all of the interesting comments that the children made whilst they were drawing.
Making Kites
Some of the children began making kites this week in the art area and this sparked off a huge interest with the other children. The art table has been full of children colouring, sticking and cutting all week! After the children had completed their kites they went straight outside to test them.
New starters in Reception
What a wonderful first day in Reception! Well done to all of our new children who came into school so well and quickly settled, enjoyed playing and making new friends.
Big Purple Play Bus
Today the children were extremely excited about visiting the Big Purple Play Bus which spent the day at our school. They all had an absolutely amazing time exploring the slides, soft play and ball pits. Today was an excellent opportunity for children to build confidence, show off their balance and gross motor skills, test their communication skills and to take controlled risks!
Outdoor Classroom Day
Our children experienced a carousel of activities on Outdoor Classroom Day. They planted plants in pots, found minbeasts, sat around the fire pit and toasted marshmallows which was a big hit with the children and staff! There were craft activities, the parachute, PE activities and the soft play equipment. The children loved the day and worked together well solving problems and discovering new possibilities.
Hand Washing
Classes 1 and 2 have had an interesting visit from some nurses telling the children all about the importance of washing their hands. They used glitter to show the children how quickly germs can spread around the classroom and to other children. We all practised washing our hands thoroughly and learnt a new song to help us!
Walworth Birds of Prey
Amazing visit from Walworth Birds of Prey today. The children and staff saw hawks, buzzards and barn owls and held their breath as owls flew right over their heads! what a fabulous experience!
Living Eggs
On Monday our ‘living eggs’ arrived in our Reception classes. The children have watched and waited very patiently and today when they arrived at school they discovered six chicks in the incubator! Throughout the day two more have hatched. Ideas for names were placed into a basket and randomly chosen by the children.
Welcome to the world…Peter, Aurora, Chippy, Fish, Daisy, Max, Tommy and Becky!
We are all enjoying learning lots of facts about how the chicks grow and hatch and we can’t wait to hold them once they are stronger and are allowed out of the incubator.
Chinese New Year
This week in school we are celebrating Chinese New Year or should we say it in Chinese, Kung hei fat choy!
On Monday it was a great start to the celebrations of Chinese New Year because Michael, a good friend of the school brought along his Chinese Lions and told the legendary story of the Ghost Lion to the children. Every child in the school took part in this wonderful assembly including the nursery children. They answered lots of questions and were picked to either perform the lion’s dance or beat the drums. This good luck dance was very well received by the children and all were keen to participate.
Thank you Michael for a fantastic morning.
