This week in year 1 the children have listened to ‘The Terrible Greedy Fossifoo’ the important message in the story is that we should take care of our environment. We therefore decided in our Science learning to grow plants. The children followed instructions to teach themselves how to successfully grow plants.
Traditional Food from Zimbabwe
As part of the Year 2 work on Zimbabwe, the children have been cooking a traditional beef stew called Nyama. They really enjoyed working with the fresh ingredients and the vast majority of children tried the food once it was cooked. We then had a discussion about eating healthily and the amount of fruit and vegetables we should eat to stay fit and healthy. The children did a fantastic job.
Nursery Gardeners
Over the last two weeks, the children in Nursery have been gaining some great skills as gardeners and have helped to create a new garden in our outdoors area. They have planted many seeds including sunflowers, beans, daisies, courgettes, pumpkins, carrots, strawberries, potatoes and onions. They have been learning all about looking after plants and have watered the seeds every day. They can’t wait for them to start to grow and to be able to eat our home grown vegetables! The children have made some fantastic observations and predictions about how tall they think the plants will grow.
Walworth Birds of Prey
Amazing visit from Walworth Birds of Prey today. The children and staff saw hawks, buzzards and barn owls and held their breath as owls flew right over their heads! what a fabulous experience!
Year 2 Family Assembly
The Year 2 children and staff worked hard to produce a family assembly on Friday which was a fun and entertaining display of jokes, readings and an interactive quiz for parents.
We had invited the Chairman of Durham County Council John Lethbridge in to see our amazing assembly and he thought our Year 2 superstars were wonderful.
110th Birthday for Cockton Hill Infants’ School
Our team were so proud on Wednesday and enjoyed meeting and greeting parents from both the past and present. It was lovely to hear nostalgic stories about our school from as far back as the 1940’s. Some former pupils even met up who sat beside each other many, many years ago. One of our families had four generations who all came to our school, all present at the event and their granddaughter currently attends school now. Many thanks to the amazing support we have received from our parents, thank you to Jay’s mum and The Town Team for baking and decorating beautiful Birthday Cakes for our celebration. The children and staff are looking forward to enjoying these tomorrow! Thank you to our friends of the school who did a great job organising the day. Thank you of course to Mrs Graham who has enabled, encouraged and supported everyone throughout this event. We had over 500 visitors!!
110th Birthday Invitation
Chinese New Year
This week in school we are celebrating Chinese New Year or should we say it in Chinese, Kung hei fat choy!
On Monday it was a great start to the celebrations of Chinese New Year because Michael, a good friend of the school brought along his Chinese Lions and told the legendary story of the Ghost Lion to the children. Every child in the school took part in this wonderful assembly including the nursery children. They answered lots of questions and were picked to either perform the lion’s dance or beat the drums. This good luck dance was very well received by the children and all were keen to participate.
Thank you Michael for a fantastic morning.
Mini Medics
This week the children were taught First Aid by professional First Aider, Gary White. Gary showed the children how to apply basic skills such as what to do if their friend is having an asthma attack or choking. They even did some CPR on the manikin. The children made some posters using publisher etc to display around school encouraging people to stay calm and talk to their patient. Of course they must dial 999 in an emergency. Well done children.
Posters for the School Entrance
The school council want to make sure our school entrance is as pleasant as possible. They have designed some posters to remind everyone how to do this.
