This week the children were taught First Aid by professional First Aider, Gary White. Gary showed the children how to apply basic skills such as what to do if their friend is having an asthma attack or choking. They even did some CPR on the manikin. The children made some posters using publisher etc to display around school encouraging people to stay calm and talk to their patient. Of course they must dial 999 in an emergency. Well done children.

Neuroscience

November 16, 2018 by admin

16/11/19

Today the children have continued to learn about the brain in a neuroscience session! The children learnt all about how neural pathways are made in the brain when we learn something new. When something is new to us we try and neural pathways are relatively weak. However, through practice, perseverance and hard work our neural pathways become stronger. As a visual example of this the children built neural pathways from one neuron to another using paper chains. By the end of the session the children all understood how we strengthen neural pathways to make us better at things. As you can see the children had a great time.

Winding Mechanisms

November 15, 2018 by admin

The children in Year 2 have been learning about winding mechanisms in their STEM sessions this week. First they had a Halloween problem to solve – Zog the monster needed to get all of his pumpkins to the top of the hill. Once the children discussed this problem they had to design something to solve it. They did really well to make varying designs of winding mechanisms. There was a lot of trial and error, teamwork, mistakes and successes in this task. Once finished, the children evaluated their designs using the black and yellow thinking hats.

Rice Crispy Cakes

November 15, 2018 by admin

We made Rice Crispy Cakes! First we wrote a list of the ingredients that we would need then we wrote the method. Then we had to follow the instructions in the correct order. It was quite simple to follow but the best part was actually making the cakes and then eating them!

Rama and Sita

November 15, 2018 by admin

We wrote instructions for ‘How to make a Diva Lamp’. First we listened to the story of The Demon King and how Rama and Sita were sent into the forest for 14 years by the evil stepmother.  After a terrible time they defeated Ravanna and were welcomed back to the town with lovely diva lights. The children loved the story and then made the lights with air drying clay.

Remembrance Assembly

November 9, 2018 by admin

The children took part in a Remembrance assembly to mark 100 years since World War 1 ended. Each child made their own poppy which they placed in the shape of 100 as an act of remembrance. “We recognise the importance of teaching the children the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day so we wanted to create an opportunity where they could reflect on this.”

Growth Mindset

November 9, 2018 by admin

09/11/18

Today the children were re-capping on the importance of having a growth mindset. We talked about how our brain is like a muscle and needs exercise. Exercise for our brain includes working hard, practicing a skill, persevering at a difficult task or seeking a challenge. In other words we can get smarter by working hard! The children were very knowledgeable about this. We then had to put this into practice. The children were given an egg and told that we were going to drop it from a height. Their task was to work as a team to make something to protect the egg. The task required teamwork, perseverance, problem solving not to mention emotional management. The children did very well and most eggs were saved from being cracked.

Year 2 visit to Durham Cathedral

October 17, 2018 by admin

On Tuesday 16th October the Year 2 children visited Durham Cathedral. We all had a fantastic time learning about the story of St Cuthbert, some children even acted out different parts. We then had our lunch in the cloisters, followed by another walk around the cathedral to look at the wonderful stained glass windows. The children were also able to draw and colour their very own stained glass windows.

Emotional Intelligence – Managing and Recognising Emotions

October 15, 2018 by admin

Following on from our last emotional intelligence session, the children have today had the opportunity to put into practice some of the strategies that they have learnt for managing emotions. They have also had the opportunity to practise recognising the emotions of others. Their task was to move some balloons from one side of the room to the other without using their hands or arms. This was a difficult task and so the children had to recognise when their emotions were affecting their performance and use one of the emotional management strategies that they have previously practised. They also had to recognise when the emotions of their peers were affecting their performance.

Research has indicated that emotional intelligence is a key indicator of success in a number of areas both as a child and into adulthood. The children are learning valuable skills for future success.

Story Writing in Literacy

October 12, 2018 by admin

The children began by developing their characters and they thought of adjectives to describe them. They thought of a setting and then started their stories. Word mats were used so they had various sentence starters and help with tricky words. The children were given several sessions to develop their stories and build on previous knowledge so a quality piece of work could be achieved. The children were all engaged and they loved the A3 templates that were folded into small books. The children can’t wait to read their finished stories to the reception classes.
