Once again we are participating in the Febfest Exhibition and have been so excited about our piece which links to the theme –
The Battle of the Somme, this was one of the bloodies military battles in history. By the end of the battle, the British Army had suffered 420,000 casualties including nearly 60,000 on the first day alone. Our piece of work focuses on the family and friends left behind. Wives and children carried out their mundane daily duties amid a time of emotional turmoil. Each shirt representing an element of the war, the countries who fought, the letters that were sent, the symbolism of the poppy, the grieving and each individual hero who will never be forgotten. The brutal truth being that these men never came home to wear their shirts again and have become – Our Angels on the Washing Line.
