Numeracy – Division

We have been learning how to share. It was fun doing outdoor maths. We used the large pavement chalks to write our sums out. in school we pretended to set a table for a party and shared out plates cups and straws. Mrs Harnaman gave us a biscuit as a treat.

Literacy – Traditional Tales

We have been building up our stores with stories including lots of traditional tales. We have been learning the story of Jacks Journey using actions and have learnt it by memory. We have made our own books based on this story but changed the animals and made it our own, we have enjoyed being authors.

Literacy – Leaflets

As part of our Eco Schools work the children have been making leaflets all about saving energy. First we shared ideas about what we know about the consequences of wasting energy. We then discussed ways in which we can stop this from happening. All of our ideas are now on various leaflets which we will display in the eco area of the school.

Numeracy – Blank Number Line

The children had lots of fun when their numeracy work was taken outside. They have been working very hard solving addition and subtraction problems using an empty number line. The children had to find the number problem in the school grounds and then solve it using chalk to make an empty number line.

Numeracy – Shape Work

We have been investigating shapes in Year 2. we looked at 2D and 3D shapes in modern design and made our own designs. Some of us made tall towers. We were all very busy with the carousel of activities.

Numeracy – Measuring and Ordering

We have been measuring using non standard units and ordering objects by size. We have been finding similar sized objects and have been practising measuring using centimetres and metres. We have been weighing objects using unifix cubes and are practising reading the scales. We have weighed ingredients to make play dough.

Science – Materials

We are enjoying investigating materials and learning about their properties. We have tested materials to see if they are waterproof and looked at how materials change when heated and cooled. The play dough making activity was a lot of fun.

Spring Topic – Robots

We are enjoying our ‘Robots’ topic and the rich learning we are gaining through literacy and numeracy related activities. We listened to a story about a malfunctioning robot then worked on our own drama linked to this. We had to retrain our robots by our partner copying our actions or by giving them instructions. We are enjoying writing facts about robots and have been making up our own stories in the robot role play area. Jace brought in his robot hoover and his robot toy which gave us lots of ideas for our writing too.

Numeracy – Symmetry

Class 5 have been working very hard to understand symmetry. The children made giant pictures using coloured spots. They had to be careful to make sure that the pictures were symmetrical. Other children had to find the line of symmetry on shapes and flags.
